Florida State University History Graduate Student Association
7th Annual Southeast Regional Graduate Student Conference
Meet Jonathan Rose
We are pleased to announce our featured keynote speaker, Professor Jonathan Rose of Drew University. Professor Rose is a graduate of Princeton University (Masters in History, 1975) and the University of Pennsylvania (Ph.D., 1981). His areas of specialty include the History of the Book and British History. His most recent work, The Literary Churchill: Author, Reader, Actor (Yale University Press, 2014), is a fascinating study of how literature informed Churchill’s political and literary career. Drawing clear parallels between Churchill’s reading habits and his parliamentary rhetoric and policy positions, The Literary Churchill deepens the shades of our understanding of one of history’s most complex and compelling personalities. In addition to this recent work, Professor Rose published The Intellectual Life of the British Working Classes, which won the 2001 Jacques Barzun Prize in Cultural History, among numerous other awards. He has published in various historical journals and is active in the Society for the History of Authorship, Reading, and Publishing (SHARP). He is currently at work on a book on the history of reading and the rise of mass media, on which he plans to speak. We are honored to welcome Professor Rose as our featured keynote speaker and look forward to his presentation.
